The Steamship Authority (SSA), an organization managing essential ferry services that transport passengers and vehicles between the mainland and nearby islands in Massachusetts, has become the most recent victim of a ransomware attack affecting operations in the U.S. The SSA’s email systems and website has been strongly affected by this attack, resulting in numerous delays. While this attack appears much less severe than recent ones, it is astonishing that a full week has not even passed since the last cyberattack against JBS occurred. 

Authorities in the federal, state, and local arenas are participating in this ransomware investigation alongside IT professionals, with the Massachusetts State Police Cybersecurity Unit and the FBI being at the forefront. Professionals are still sizing up the attack and working on uncovering specifics around the extent of its impact on the organization. 


Disruptions in the SSA’s logistics are not expected to be fully recovered right away, but ticketing services are still available for customers at a slowed pace. The most inconvenient element coming to light from this attack is the requirement for customers to use cash in lieu of credit cards to purchase tickets and parking spots. The SSA was able to somewhat overcome the obstacles of the attack efficiently by utilizing their social media accounts to exhibit their ferry schedules and inform customers of the active cyberattack they are enduring. 

An IT specialist has commented that ‘nobody’ is safe from a cyberattack, furthering the ideology that cybersecurity is vital now and will only become more necessary in the future.   • Disable Cards: Reach out to your financial institutions to have all of your linked credit and debit cards disabled. Blocking access to your accounts will prevent hackers from illegally taking your money.
  • Kick Hackers Out: Take advantage of Sony’s security option to kick out a hacker during the recovery process. See the below steps to do this:
    • Once logged in, click ‘account settings’
    • On the left side of the screen, click ‘security’
    • At the bottom, click ‘sign out of all devices’
    • Click ‘ok’ to confirm this step

While it seems unlikely that a hack into your gaming system account would lead to much loss, hackers are able to steal your personal information such as address and bank account numbers. It is imperative you take action right away to minimize a hacker’s success.
